Helping Taplejung Landslide Survivors

On June 10, 2015, Sonam Sherpa, president of “Smile for Hope” Nepal, and staff member Sangam Sherpa, travelled to Taplejung to distribute relief to the villagers that were affected by the massive landslide. “Smile for Hope” distributed tarpaulin tents, rice and other food to 107 households.

The landslide had swept away more than 8 villages in Taplejung, which lies in the North east corner of Nepal. This district is one of the remotest places in Nepal and is inhabited mostly by Limbu and Sherpa ethnic groups.

Many experts believe that Nepal will suffer more landslides like this in the monsoon season as the earthquakes and the still continuing aftershocks have loosened the soil and the rocks that form the mountains. The monsoon rains often last for at least 3 months.
